Biography

James was born in 1806. He was baptised at Alverstoke, Hampshire on 13 July 1806 with his parents named as Michael and Sarah.[1]

He was at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst from 1820 to 1823. In 1825 he sailed for Bengal where he was in the 44th regiment.[2]

On 16 July 1839 he married Jessy Fenton, daughter of Samuel Fenton, at Stamford, Lincolnshire.[3] They had the following children:

  • William Fenton de Wend, age 10 in the 1851 census, born in about 1841 off the Cape of Good Hope[4]
  • Mary Emma, baptised at Cawnpore, Bengal on 6 March 1842[5] and buried there on 17 March 1842.[6]
  • Douglas Campbell, baptised at Nottingham, Nottinghamshire on 17 January 1844[7]
  • Jessy, baptised at Chester Cathedral, Chester, Cheshire on 8 May 1846[8]
  • Ida Sophia, baptised at Chester Cathedral on 11 October 1847[9]
  • Mary Adelaide Louisa, whose birth was registered at Northampton, Northamptonshire in the first quarter of 1850[10]
  • Emily, whose birth was registered at Northampton, Northamptonshire in the fourth quarter of 1852[11]
  • Frances Cayley, whose birth was registered at Northampton, Northamptonshire in the fourth quarter of 1852[12]

1851 census: Northampton, Northamptonshire, age 43, army captain. Daughter Mary A L, born Northampton.[13]

His death was registered in the second quarter of 1856 at Northampton, Northamptonshire,[14] He was buried, age 49, at St Giles, Northampton on 20 June 1856.[15]
